Statement of Strategy

2024 – 2027

MARA, the Maritime Area Regulatory Authority was established on 17th July 2023.

As an independent regulatory authority under the aegis of the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC) we have a critical role in the new streamlined system for regulation of the maritime area.

Our strategy sets out MARA’s mission, vision and values and identifies 18 strategic objectives across four strategic priorities.

Over the lifecycle of this strategy MARA is committed to being a leading voice for sustainable management, and protection of Ireland’s maritime area through effective regulation. We will also proactively inform policy, legislation, and better informed decisions for development in the maritime area while mitigating harm in the marine environment.

We are proud to launch our first strategy, a living document which recognises the principle that Under the shelter of the ocean people thrive.

MARA’s first Strategic Plan 2024-2027 has been developed in consultation with our stakeholders through a combination of surveys, one-to-one meetings and group engagement sessions.

We would like to thank all who took the time and effort to engage as this has been taken into account in the preparation of this Plan.

As we embark on our strategic journey in 2024, it is framed against a backdrop of continued sustainable development, growth and stewardship of the maritime sector and how regulation may evolve by 2027.

Our engagement process with our stakeholders is only beginning and the implementation of this plan will drive the evolution of MARA’s stakeholder ecosystem.

Join us in our mission to protect and enhance our maritime area for generations to come.
